Game Capture Neo vs 4K S: passthrough is not recording
Compare Game Capture Neo and 4K S by capture format, passthrough, cables and computer requirements. Check the intended recording mode before buying.
Capture cardsVideo formatsUSB
Neo fits a checked 1080p60 capture path; its supported 4K passthrough does not make it a 4K recorder. 4K S supports a documented 4K60 MJPG mode, while its 4K NV12 limit differs. Choose by the exact mode your computer and OBS can receive.
Compare the documented differences below, then check the exact kit and the requirements for your own computer before buying.
QUICK ANSWER
Choose by the job and the complete setup
Neo fits a checked 1080p60 capture path; its supported 4K passthrough does not make it a 4K recorder. 4K S supports a documented 4K60 MJPG mode, while its 4K NV12 limit differs. Choose by the exact mode your computer and OBS can receive.
How these options were chosen
Compare a specific input, display passthrough, USB recording format and computer; do not combine the largest numbers from separate specification rows. This comparison uses manufacturer documentation, not a hands-on performance test. Current prices and availability are not verified.

What else does the setup need?
Follow the connection before choosing a bundle. These diagrams explain the setup; they are not performance tests.
HDMI source to OBS, with a separate display
Console or other unencrypted HDMI source
HDMI cable to the capture card input
USB data cable to a supported computer running OBS
Display connection: capture card HDMI output → second HDMI cable → monitor or TV. The display mode and the USB recording mode are separate checks.
Game Capture Neo does not record 4K. Its documented bundle includes a USB cable, not HDMI cables. Check your computer's USB data speed and system requirements, then check the exact recording mode.
If the game and OBS run on the same PC, try OBS capture before buying a card. The free checker covers listed SDR, fixed-refresh modes; HDR, VRR and other modes need a separate manufacturer check.
Separate what your display receives from what OBS records
A passthrough connection sends the HDMI signal to your display. Capture sends a supported format over USB to the computer. Those paths may use different resolutions and frame rates, so a supported monitor mode does not prove a matching recording mode.
Neo's documented Full HD capture ceiling is the key reason to skip it when 4K recording is required. If 1080p60 is the target, check the complete host and signal requirements before assuming you need the higher-spec model.
02
On 4K S, check the USB video format
The published format table distinguishes MJPG and NV12. In the subset checked by our tool, 4K S uses MJPG for 4K60, while NV12 at 4K is limited to 30 fps. Do not treat all 4K60 labels as an identical feed into OBS.
Check what formats your own operating system and OBS installation expose. The free checker covers documented SDR, fixed-refresh modes without DSC; HDR and VRR need separate source checks.
03
Count cables and verify the computer
Neo documentation lists a USB C-to-A cable but no HDMI cables. The documented 4K S kit lists a USB C-to-C cable and one HDMI 2.0 cable. Count every cable your passthrough and computer path needs.
Check USB data speed, operating system, CPU/GPU requirements, an unencrypted HDMI source and how console audio will reach OBS. A USB-C-shaped socket alone does not establish bandwidth. Our tool cannot inspect hardware or guarantee the result; record and play back a private sample after setup.
