Do you need a capture card for console streaming?

Stream from the console when the show is simple

For gameplay with a headset, the console's built-in streaming is the quickest way to start. Try it before you pay for anything.

• Keep it if it reaches your platform at a picture quality you are happy with.
• Write down the exact thing it cannot do: an overlay, a recording, a second scene.
• Another streamer owning a card is not a reason to buy one.

When a capture card is worth it

A card is worth it when you want OBS to do the work: several sources, alerts, a local recording, or a camera placed where you choose. Your computer still needs a suitable USB port and enough GPU and encoder capacity to run that stream.

Check the whole chain before you pay

Write down what the console outputs, your display's resolution and refresh rate, whether you need HDR, your computer's operating system and which USB ports are free. Passthrough is what reaches your display. Capture is what reaches OBS. They are not always the same resolution or refresh rate.

• Check the supported input, passthrough and capture modes on the maker's page.
• Plan how your headset, party chat and mic will reach the stream.
• Check how HDCP is handled for your console and what you want to capture.
• Check which cables are in the box and which USB port the card needs.

Test it while you can still return it

Record ten minutes with movement, party chat, scene changes and normal game audio. Check the start and the end of the recording for audio that has drifted out of sync, check your display still gets the picture you expect, and read the OBS log for rendering lag or encoding lag.
