The download number on your internet plan does not tell you whether a live broadcast will stay stable. Streaming is an upload job, and the useful number is the lower speed you can repeat while the home network is behaving normally—not the best result from one quiet test.
A browser test is only the first filter. It can show that a target is unrealistic, but it cannot prove the route to Twitch, YouTube or Kick. The final answer comes from a representative private stream, the platform health view and the OBS session log.
Start with repeatable upload, not advertised download
Use Ethernet if that is how you will stream. Test several times near the hour you normally go live, with the household using the connection normally. Keep the lowest repeatable upload result and note idle ping, jitter and upload-loaded latency.
- Pause only the traffic you can realistically keep paused during every stream.
- Avoid mobile data unless you understand the test transfer and plan limits.
- A nearby test endpoint is a capacity check, not a platform-ingest check.
Leave room for the connection to breathe
Twitch’s current streaming FAQ recommends upload speed equal to your bitrate plus 30%. That means a 6 Mbps stream needs roughly 8 Mbps upload before normal variation and other devices are considered. StreamerToolkits uses an even simpler conservative budget: do not assign more than about 70% of the measured upload to video.
Headroom is a starting rule, not a guarantee. Wi-Fi, congestion, routing and household uploads can still create loss below the calculated ceiling.
Match the platform and the picture
YouTube publishes recommended bitrate ranges by resolution, frame rate and codec. Kick currently supports up to 8,000 kbps, 1080p and 60 fps with CBR. Twitch standard single-track settings and Enhanced Broadcasting are different workflows; eligible Affiliates and Partners can use Twitch’s automatic 2K configuration.
- Fast games need more compression budget than a static camera-led show.
- When upload is limited, a stable 720p profile can beat unstable 1080p.
- Do not force a high source quality when viewers cannot receive a reliable version.
Prove the route with the actual show
Run a ten-minute private or unlisted stream with the real game, camera, alerts and busiest scene. Speak over normal game audio and move quickly. Watch the platform health view, then save the OBS log immediately.
- Network-dropped frames mean the route could not sustain the stream.
- Encoding lag means the encoder missed deadlines.
- Rendering lag means OBS lacked GPU scheduling room before encoding.
Keep the known-good profile
Record the platform, codec, resolution, frame rate, video bitrate, audio bitrate, test time and result. After any driver, router, plugin or platform change, return to that profile before inventing a new one.
