A normal browser speed test cannot tell you whether the path from OBS to a specific Twitch ingest server will hold. Twitch provides bandwidth-test mode so the stream reaches its ingest system and appears in Twitch Inspector without becoming publicly viewable.

Treat this as a rehearsal, not a blank-screen connection check. The test should include the game, camera, alerts, scene changes and motion that are most likely to expose the failure.

Protect the stream key first

Your stream key authorizes broadcasts to your channel. Never paste it into a diagnostic, screenshot, chat message or support post. Work only inside OBS and Twitch’s own dashboard, and reset the key immediately if it is exposed.

Enable Twitch bandwidth-test mode

Twitch documents the optional bandwidthtest=true parameter on the broadcast stream key. In OBS, use Twitch’s integrated bandwidth-test option when available, or append ?bandwidthtest=true to the stream key inside OBS for the test. The parameter disables live viewing while allowing Twitch Inspector to measure the broadcast.

FIELD NOTE

Remove test mode before the real show. If OBS is connected through a managed account flow, use the test control exposed by that integration rather than copying the key elsewhere.

Make the ten minutes representative

Open the busiest scene, run the real game or application, move quickly, speak over normal audio and trigger at least one alert. A static desktop test can pass while the show still fails.

  • Watch OBS Stats for dropped, skipped and lagged frames.
  • Keep the target bitrate and encoder profile written down.
  • Do not change settings during the baseline run.

Read Twitch Inspector and the OBS log together

Inspector shows the Twitch-facing broadcast health. The OBS log shows whether the local machine rendered and encoded on time and whether the network dropped frames. One view without the other can hide the subsystem that failed.

Change one variable and repeat

If the route drops frames, reduce bitrate or change the network path before touching GPU settings. If rendering or encoding counters move, repair that local subsystem. Repeat the same scene for the same duration so the comparison means something.
