A camera cannot show detail it has no light to see. In a dark room a new webcam still has to brighten the picture, which adds grain or blur, and your face still looks soft. One light often changes more, because it improves what reaches the camera you already own.
So test light first. If your current camera then looks clean and steady, keep it. If it still falls short at the size and frame rate you stream at, compare a webcam against that better-lit picture.

After you connect the gear
Repeat the recording with the new light or camera. Judge the result at the size it appears in your stream, and keep a note of exposure and white balance settings.

Turn off the ceiling light. Put one soft light a little above eye level and off to one side. Make sure there is no bright window behind you, clean the lens, and lock exposure and white balance if your camera software lets you.
- Record your real OBS scene, not a full-screen camera preview.
- Check movement and skin tone as well as sharpness.
- Keep framing, crop and resolution the same for both recordings.
Buy the light first when the picture is dark or grainy
If your face is dark, grainy or smeared when you move, a key light is the first thing to buy. Look for steady brightness, colour control and a mount that fits your desk before RGB effects.
Buy the webcam when the lit picture still falls short
A new webcam is worth it when, with good light, your current camera still cannot give you the frame rate, manual control, focus or detail you need at the size it appears on stream.
- Check your operating system and the camera's control software.
- Check the resolution it supports at the frame rate you will use.
- Check you have a free USB port that can carry it alongside your other cameras and capture card.
- Judge a recording from OBS, not the maker's sample video.
Keep it only if you can see the difference on stream
After the upgrade, repeat the same 30 seconds of moving and talking. If you cannot see the improvement at the size and quality viewers get, the purchase did not fix anything they notice.
