A camera cannot preserve detail it cannot see. In a dark room, a new webcam may raise exposure, slow the shutter or add noise while the face still looks soft. One controlled light can create a larger visible change because it improves the signal reaching the camera you already own.
Test lighting before resolution. If the current camera becomes clean, stable and well separated from the background, keep it. If it still fails at the final OBS crop and frame rate, then compare a dedicated webcam against that improved baseline.
Run the lamp test
Turn off the ceiling light. Put one safe, diffused light slightly above eye level and 30–45 degrees to one side. Remove a bright window from behind you, clean the lens and lock exposure and white balance when the camera software allows it.
- Record the final OBS scene, not a full-screen camera preview.
- Check motion and skin tone as well as sharpness.
- Keep framing, crop and streaming resolution identical for the comparison.
Buy the light first when exposure is the failure
If the face is dark, noisy or blurred by slow exposure, a controllable key light is the first useful purchase. Prioritize stable brightness, color control and a mount that works with the real desk over decorative RGB.
Buy the webcam when the lit baseline still fails
A dedicated webcam earns its place when the current camera cannot provide the required frame rate, manual control, focus behavior, USB reliability or final cropped detail after lighting is fixed.
- Confirm operating-system and control-software support.
- Check the supported resolution at the frame rate you will actually use.
- Verify USB bandwidth alongside capture cards and other cameras.
- Judge the encoded OBS recording, not a marketing sample.
Keep the cheaper change only if viewers can see it
Repeat the same 30-second movement and speaking test after the upgrade. If the improvement disappears at the on-stream crop, compression and viewer size, the purchase did not solve a viewer-facing problem.
