Zero: reliability before production value

Do not cover a damaged signal with new gear. Resolve network drops, encoder overload, render lag, audio routing and missing recordings first. A stable 720p stream is a stronger foundation than a 4K camera inside a failing broadcast.

• Save a known-good OBS profile.
• Record a complete preflight test.
• Confirm the platform VOD and local audio tracks.
• Document the recovery scene and mute hotkeys.

One: intelligible voice

Move the current mic closer, reduce room noise and set gain correctly before shopping. In noisy rooms, a dynamic mic used close to the mouth is often the useful category; in a controlled room, a simple USB mic may be enough. XLR is a workflow choice, not a badge of seriousness.

Two: one good light

Light reveals the quality your existing camera already has. Turn off a harsh ceiling source, place one soft light above eye level and to one side, then separate yourself from the background. Only compare cameras after exposure and white balance are stable.

Three: camera and framing

Try a current phone as a webcam before buying. If you need a dedicated camera, choose reliable frame rate, manual control, low-light behavior and mounting over maximum resolution. Most stream layouts display the camera as a small crop, where lighting and composition dominate.

Four: control and capture—only when the format demands it

Keyboard hotkeys beat an unused control deck. Native console broadcast beats a capture chain you cannot troubleshoot. Buy a controller after repeated actions are slowing the show; buy a capture card when overlays, multiple sources or recording justify it.

• Check USB bandwidth and operating-system support.
• Confirm passthrough resolution and refresh rate.
• Plan console voice-chat audio before checkout.
• Keep the single-PC path until dual-PC complexity solves a measured problem.
