The highest number your connection can briefly upload is not your streaming bitrate. A live broadcast needs room for normal network variation, audio, retransmission and everything else using the connection.
Start with the current platform guidance, then choose the lower of that platform profile and a conservative share of your repeatable upload speed. Validate under motion. A lower, stable stream usually looks better than a sharper stream that sheds frames.
Treat upload as a budget
Run more than one wired speed test at the time of day you usually stream. Use the lower repeatable result, not the best screenshot. As a conservative starting rule, reserve about 30% rather than planning to consume the entire measured upload.
- 12 Mbps repeatable upload does not mean 12,000 kbps video.
- Audio and protocol overhead use part of the route.
- Wi-Fi variability deserves more headroom, not more optimism.
- If others share the connection, test while the home is normally active.
Match bitrate to motion and distribution
Fast games, confetti, foliage and full-screen camera movement are harder to encode than a static talk show. Resolution, frame rate and codec all change the answer. Platform access and transcoding also matter: viewers on limited connections need a version they can actually play.
- Prioritize clean motion over a resolution badge.
- If bandwidth is tight, 720p60 can be a better live result than unstable 1080p60.
- For camera-led content, 1080p30 may preserve detail with less motion pressure.
- Use the platform’s current official table; limits and codec programs can change.
Build the first profile
Use CBR when the platform requires it, set the platform’s requested keyframe interval, and begin with a supported hardware encoder. Pick one resolution and one bitrate, then record the profile before testing.
StreamerToolkits deliberately gives a conservative starting profile. It is not a promise that every ingest route, account, codec or device will behave the same way.
Prove it with a motion test
Stream privately or unlisted for ten minutes. Use the real game and busiest scene. Watch Stats while the test runs, then inspect both the platform VOD and the OBS log. If network drops appear, reduce bitrate. If rendering or encoding lag appears, repair that subsystem instead of blaming upload.
Do not tune around a mystery
Write the profile and result down. The moment a test succeeds, it becomes the known-good baseline you can return to after a driver, plugin, game or platform change.
